Battle Report 6

Narrative

The loyalist forces have made contact with the Space Wolves, but the Tau Empire response to the distress beacon scattered both the loyalist humans and Space Wolves. The loyal imperial forces are falling back in an effort to get some distance from the Tau, so that they can strengthen their link with the Space Wolves and the main body of their hidden war band. The loyalist forces are to fall back to a rendezvous point near an old port where ore was once hauled off planet. Underneath the rendezvous point is a network of underground tunnels that has provided a way for the loyal imperial war band to hide and move in their struggle to survive. From one of these underground tunnels, another group of loyalists is to link up with the Imperial forces and unite. The Tau forces, joined in the hunt by their human auxiliaries, are pursuing the imperial forces. The human rebels have hunted the loyalist forces for years, and  there is no love lost between these one time brothers.

Game Notes

We decided to make our own scenario based on the Open War deck. Given our narrative, we chose the Objective Card of "The Comet", though in our scenario, we are imagining the "comet" is actually the location of the loyal forces who the imperials are to rendezvous with, whose exact location is unknown. We opted to set a points value for the battle rather than leaving that up to the individual player, as per the Open War rules. We chose a random deployment card, and decided to use the "Eager for the Fight" Twist Card. This was intended to represent that the loyal imperials have been in hiding for years, being hunted by the rebels. The rebels, for their part, have fought for years trying to exterminate those still loyal to the Imperium, and frustratingly have failed to drive them out of hiding. Now that the loyalists have shown themselves, and feel like they might stand a chance against the xenos and rebels, this engagement has the weight of years of emotion behind it. Each force also drew a Ruse Card, the Tau side drawing "Outflank" and the Imperial side "Inspiring Speech".

There are five pieces of scenery that can potentially become the objective marker. The Sky Sheild Landing pad in the center of the board, and four hatches, each in the center of a board quadrant, are being used to represent entrance points into the underground tunnel network. As per the scenario rules, at the start of the third battle round, a random roll will determine which of these will be the only objective marker in the game, representing the other loyal forces that the imperial forces are to rendezvous with.
